Divorce or dissolving a civil partnership

Pensions are taken into account during divorce or civil partnership dissolution settlement discussions. Your solicitor will need to consider any benefits you and your spouse or partner may have including benefits payable from the Scheme.

Please ask your solicitor to contact UK Pensions Operations for the necessary information before a pension sharing or earmarking order is drafted.

Death benefits - keep up-to-date

To make sure the right people receive a lump sum death benefit, the bereavement grant, and dependant’s pension, keep us up-to-date.

Make sure any lump sum is paid to the right person

The lump sum is paid if you die within five years of receiving your first pension payment. You can nominate more than one person and tell us what percentage you'd like each person to receive. To let us know who you would like to nominate:

If you use My Online Pension:

  • Login to My Online Pension
  • Fill in the Letter of Intent form
  • The details will be updated immediately.

or

If you don't use My Online Pension:

  • Print and complete the Letter of Intent
  • Send it to us in the post (address is on the form)
  • Details will be updated and we’ll confirm the changes have been done.

Nominate someone to receive a dependant’s pension

A dependant’s pension is automatically paid to your spouse or civil partner for the rest of their life. If you’re not married or in a civil partnership, and left service after 1 October 1987, you can nominate:

  • a partner
  • an aged parent
  • a disabled child who isn’t able to support themselves financially.

In the event of your death, the people you have nominated will need to provide evidence of their financial dependency or interdependency.

To let us know who you would like to nominate:

  • Login to My Online Pension
  • Fill in the Dependant Nomination form on the homepage
  • The details will be updated immediately.
